KINGSTON, R.I. – La Salle rallied from a 3-0 deficit after the first inning to sweep the series from Rhode Island with a 6-4 victory on Sunday to conclude the 2016 season.
Sophomore
Mackenzie Obert had a three-run home run to pace the offense, while senior
Kendra Heyer and junior
Suzanne Swanicke each had a pair of hits.
Sophomore Mackenzie Peace picked up the victory, her second of the weekend, with a complete game performance. She scattered five hits, gave up four earned runs and struck out one for her fourth win of the season.
Rhode Island (12-32, 3-18 A-10) hit three solo home runs in the first inning to take the 3-0 lead. The Rams led until Obert's fifth home run of the season, a three-run blast, tied the game up.
La Salle (16-28, 7-14 A-10) took the lead in the fifth on Heyer's infield single. She then stole second and scored on senior
Erica Reis' double.
The Explorers added an insurance run in the seventh on a fielder's choice. URI had a two-out double to make it 6-4 but Peace got the final out on a groundout to close the win.
The game wraps up the 2016 season and the careers of Reis, Heyer,
Genevieve Gaynor,
Mary Cate Scott, and
Alli Waddington. The class became the winningest senior class since the 2008 class after this weekend's sweep.
The Explorers have now won eight straight games versus Rhode Island.
