PHILADELPHIA- The La Salle volleyball team captured two wins today in day one of the La Salle Invitational. The Explorers opened against Morgan State, besting the Lady Bears 3-0 [12-25,14-25,12-25]. They followed up with a second 3-0 sweep against Quinnipiac [20-25, 23-25, 18-25].
The freshman class demonstrated their strength in the first match on the court against the Lady Bears, with
Devin Corah taking charge to record 11 kills and three service aces. Junior
Bryanna Davis posted nine kills for the Explorers. Sophomore
Madison Kuch stepped up to put in eight kills and two digs on the court. Freshman
Catherine Edgington recorded six kills against the Lady Bears in her Explorer debut.
Newcomer
Kathryn Wood stepped in to lead the match in digs, posting 13. Libero
Jensen Sharrits followed up, recording nine digs against Morgan State.
"We have been really disciplined at practice the past three weeks. With seven new freshman, I just thought we all gelled really well together today," said Davis. "We just took care of the ball, put it in the right spots and played our hardest."
The Explorers rounded out the day with a close win over Quinnipiac to complete the home opener. Kuch and Davis lead the pace for the Explorers, posting 11 kills apiece. Corah and Edgington each recorded seven kills against the Bobcats. Sharrits posted 21 digs to pace the team, while both Wood and Davis recorded six digs on the court.
The Explorers look to build on this strong entrance into 2016 in their second day of play and throughout the season.
"Today was a great day for La Salle Volleyball. Starting the season with two 3-0 sweeps is exactly the momentum we need to continue moving toward our goals for this year," said head coach
Caitlin Schweihofer. "We received significant contributions from several players, and started to gel as a cohesive group. We will work to continue to improve in the areas that need improvement and perfect the skills that worked in our favor."
The Explorers will return to Tom Gola tomorrow for day two of the La Salle Invitational. They will face Saint Francis at 2:30 pm, followed by NJIT at 7:00 pm to cap off the tournament.
