La Salle Edges Fairleigh Dickinson

TEANECK, N.J- The La Salle volleyball team topped Fairleigh Dickinson in a midweek matchup away on Wednesday night. The Explorers bested the Knights in a tight 3-2 contest [25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 12- 25, 15-13].

The Explorers were able to take charge of the match early, grabbing the first two sets 25-23 and 25-22.  In set one, the Explorers jumped out ahead by three before the Knights were able to put a point up on the board. Fairleigh Dickinson was able to charge back, but La Salle remained in control of the match. The Explorers ended the match on another three point run with a trio of kills from freshmen Catherine Edgington, Katie Wood and Devin Corah to claim the first set.

La Salle played point for point with Fairleigh Dickinson in set two, but never let go of their lead.  The Explorers maintained at least a single point lead to finish the tight set 25-23.

The Explorers dropped the next two sets to the Knights, 23-25 and 12-25. In set three the Explorers jumped out ahead by four, but the Knights crept back as La Salle wavered. Fairleigh Dickinson was able to push back with a five point run at 8-7 to grab the lead. La Salle was unable to recover and the Knights controlled the remainder of the set. The Knights took charge in set four with a six point run at 7-13 to top the Explorers 12-25.

In the final set, La Salle was able to remain in the game and battle it out with Fairleigh Dickinson to take the set 15-13. La Salle took a four point lead at 5-1 and remained in control of the match to complete the game.

"Although it was difficult at times, I am proud of the team for persevering through five sets of volleyball," said head coach Caitlin Schweihofer.  "FDU was extremely scrappy and frustrating our hitters. We lost focus in sets three and four but thankfully were able to pull out a team win in the end."

Corah recorded her second double-double of the season, posting 19 kills and 11 digs for the Explorers. Corah averaged a .208 hitting percentage. Classmate Jenny Edwards followed up with 12 digs and averaged a .125 attack percentage.

Ashley Felton led the team in blocks, posting three, while Bryanna Davis posted two for the La Salle efforts. Jensen Sharrits tied a season high of 27 digs against the Knights and freshman Hayley Belcik recorded 12 dugs. Katie Wood posted 40 assists and a season high of 15 digs for La Salle.

The Explorers return to action this weekend when they compete in the Big 5 Tournament. They will face Penn at the Palestra at 7:00 PM on Friday, then return to Tom Gola on Saturday to face Temple at 11:00 AM and Villanova at 7:30 PM.
