QUEENS, N.Y- La Salle volleyball topped Binghamton in a 3-0 match in day one of the Jack Kaiser Invitational at St. John's. The Explorers (5-0) met the Bearcats (0-3) to take their first win of the tournament and bring their record to 6-0.
La Salle opened set one slowly, maintaining a small lead over the Bearcats, thanks to several strong defensive blocks from Binghamton. The Explorers then pulled away to take the set 25-18. In the second set, the Explorers pulled away early, tallying four points before the Bobcats were able to post a single point. Â They maintained their hold on the Bobcats, never ahead by less than two points. La Salle once again pulled away to finish the set in a 25-18 decision.
The Explorers led the third set with a four point run before the Bobcats were able to answer with a point. The Bobcats were able to pull up and tie the match 14-14, leaving the two teams battling it out point for point. The Explorers went on a four point run, which the Bobcats answered with a four point run of their own. La Salle pulled away in the final stretch to finish the set 25-21 to complete the contest.
"Today's win was a total team effort and it felt great to win against a good opponents on the same court I used to play on," said head coach and St.John's alum
Caitlin Schweihofer. "We received solid performance from several players, but
Jensen Sharrits,
Devin Corah and
Ashley Felton played especially well. We are happy to earn another win, and look to quickly prepare for two more tough matches tomorrow."
Devin Corah led the match in kills and aces, with 13 and two, respectively. Senior
Ashley Felton posted seven blocks on the defensive side, while
Jensen Sharrits tallied 21 digs. Freshman
Kathryn Wood recorded 33 assists and Jenny Edwards posted nine kills. The team averaged a .263 hitting percentage.
The Explorers will face St. John's (3-0) in a contest tomorrow at noon to continue their competition.Â
