AMHERST, Mass. –
Michelle Hagarty hit her 27
th career home run to tie the all-time program record in a La Salle (19-23, 7-12 A-10) win in the opening game of the series at Massachusetts (23-20, 11-4 A-10) on Saturday afternoon at Sortino Field. The Explorers took the opener 6-5 before the Minutewomen evened the series with a 6-5 win in game two.
La Salle 6, Massachusetts 5
Hagarty hit the game-tying homer in the 6
th inning in the comeback victory for La Salle. The homer tied her with Megan Hodgson for the all-time program record.
Mackenzie Obert then nailed a two-run homer to cap a three-run 6
th and put La Salle in the lead for good.
McKenzie Peace (W, 6-3) pitched the final 2.2 innings to earn the win. UMass scored in the 7
th to get within a run before Peace stranded the tying run at 2
nd to end the game.
La Salle got out to a 1-0 lead on a
Christina Bascara single in the 1
st before UMass scored twice in the 3
rd and once more in the 4
th to take a lead. The Explorers tied it in the 5
th when Bascara was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and
Taylor Rohrbaugh hit a sac fly.
UMass regained the lead in their half of the 6
th to set the stage for the late game heroics.
Massachusetts 6, La Salle 5
The Minutewomen scored twice in the bottom of the 7
th to erase a 5-4 La Salle lead and steal a win in walkoff fashion in game two.
La Salle entered the top of the 7
th trailing 4-3 but scored twice to take a 5-4 lead.
Suzanne Swanicke tied the game at 4-4 with a single to right with the bases loaded before
Christina Bascara plated the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Lindsey Gaines drilled a three-run homer to tie the game at 3-3 in the 4
th before Massachusetts regained the lead in the 5
th. UMass had taken a 3-0 lead in the 1st.
La Salle will go for the series win in the rubber match on Sunday afternoon at Sortino Field. First pitch is set for noon.
