Volleyball Goes Toe-to-Toe with Dayton in 3-1 Atlantic 10 Semifinal Defeat

RICHMOND, Va. - The La Salle University volleyball team went toe-to-toe against a strong Dayton team in the Atlantic 10 Conference Semifinals at VCU's Siegel Center on Saturday, dropping a tough 3-1 decision to the second-seeded Flyers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Explorers took a 4-1 advantage to open the first set and remained on top, 7-6, after an ace from freshman Elizabeth Osborn. Dayton followed that up with a 7-2 run, however, to go on top by four. La Salle would pull within two, but that was as close as it would come, as Dayton took a 25-20 win.
  • After the Flyers took a two-point lead early on in the second set, a kill and ace from Osborn pushed the Explorers ahead, leading 10-9 after a kill by senior Madison Kuch. Although Dayton went back on top behind a 4-0 run, La Salle hung around and pulled within one at 21-20, forcing the Flyers to burn a timeout. But Dayton scored the final four points of the set to take the second.
  • In the third set, the Explorers faced a four-point deficit in the early stages before working it back to a two-point difference. La Salle then went off for a 5-0 run to suddenly jump in front, 17-14.
  • Dayton answered in the third set with three straight points to tie the score at 17 apiece. Kills by junior Devin Corah and Osborn put La Salle in position to seal the set before Dayton tied it again at 24 all. Kuch then put the Explorers ahead by one, and an error by the Flyers capped off a 26-24 win for La Salle.
  • The Flyers once again jumped out to a four-point lead in the fourth set, but back-to-back aces from Osborn and a kill by Kuch tied it at 9-9. La Salle later took a one-point lead and held an 18-17 lead after two more Kuch kills. The Explorers pushed their advantage to 21-18 on a Corah kill and stood four points away from forcing a fifth and final set. But Dayton ended the match on a 7-1 run to overcome La Salle.
