PHILADELPHIA - On the heels of being named the Atlantic 10's Co-Player of the Week, La Salle senior
B.J. Johnson has been named the Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for the third time this season, it was announced on Tuesday.
Johnson averaged 26.0 points and 16.0 rebounds over two games for the Explorers last week, including a 29-point, 23-rebound performance against No. 18 Rhode Island. The 6-7 forward posted the second-best rebounding performance in NCAA Division I this season against the Rams, and was one shy of breaking the 25-year old Atlantic 10 single-game record held by George Washington's Yinka Dare.
The Philadelphia native continued his stellar play on Saturday at Fordham, leading La Salle with 23 points and grabbing nine rebounds. His efficient 8-for-11 performance from the field also yielded the 1,000th point of his Explorer career. With 11:35 remaining in the second half, Johnson hit a short jumper to eclipse the mark in less than two seasons in a La Salle uniform.
On the season, Johnson ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in scoring at 20.9 points per game, and third in rebounding at 8.6 per contest. He also stands third in free throw percentage (.862) and in the Top 15 in steals and blocked shots.
Johnson, along with fellow seniors
Johnnie Shuler,
Amar Stukes and
Tony Washington, will celebrate Senior Night at Tom Gola Arena on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by visiting
