Softball Falls Twice on Final Day of Madeira Beach Invitational

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The La Salle softball team (2-7) lost to Alabama State (5-14) and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (8-3) on Sunday in the final day of the Madeira Beach Invitational.

Game 1: Alabama State 6, La Salle 2
The Hornets got to Reilly Gearhart (L, 1-2) for five runs over the first two frames, scoring three in the 1st and adding two more in the 2nd.

Freshman Morgan Orlowski limited ASU to one unearned run over the final five innings, surrendering just three hits and no walks.

The Explorers got a run back in the 3rd when Taylor Rohrbaugh walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. The Hornets answered in the top of the 4th with an RBI single by Hatty Shope to push their lead back to five.

La Salle made it 6-2 in the home half of the 4th when Gearhart singled and later scored on a passed ball, but Justine Jean held the Explorers scoreless over the final three innings.

Game 2: SIUE 7, La Salle 2
The Cougars scored four runs over the first two innings against Marlo Roadcap (L, 1-3), who tossed all six frames for the Explorers. SIUE tacked on a run in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings to take a 7-0 lead.

The Explorers scored twice in the 7th against Ashley Koziol (W, 2-1) after Angelina Refice led off with a single and Emma Schweigert walked. After a Jackie Heim groundout moved the runners into scoring position, Ashley Mendenhall got La Salle on the board with a grounder to 1st and Taylor Rohrbaugh added an RBI single.

La Salle returns to action next weekend in a tournament at Hampton University in Virginia. The Explorers will play five games, beginning with a Friday morning matchup with Nebraska-Omaha.
