Softball Edged by Fordham, 5-2, in Season Finale

BRONX, N.Y. - Despite another strong pitching performance by junior Marlo Roadcap, the La Salle University softball team dropped its season finale at defending Atlantic 10 champion Fordham by a 5-2 margin on Sunday.

Roadcap allowed two earned runs over six innings after holding the Rams to a single earned run and striking out eight in Saturday's 3-1 defeat.

The Explorers jumped in front early in the top of the first, when freshman Marissa Ewald came through with a two-out, RBI double down the left field line. Ewald finished her day 2-for-3 with two doubles, and closed her strong first season at La Salle with a team-high .309 batting average.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Fordham scored three times in the bottom of the frame. Deanna Burbridge delivered the big blow with a two-out, two-run single after an error by the Explorers extended the inning.

From there, Roadcap and Fordham starting pitcher Paige Rauch traded scoreless innings through the fifth. The La Salle left-hander scattered three hits over the four innings while Rauch allowed just one baserunner -- Taylor Rohrbaugh by way of a single in the fifth -- during the span.

The Rams tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth before the Explorers had one last chance in the seventh.

Ewald began the inning with her second double of the contest. Three batters later, sophomore Jackie Heim ripped an RBI double of her own to trim the deficit to 5-2, but the rally fell short as Rauch closed things out a batter later.
