Volleyball Sweeps NJIT on First Day of La Salle Invitational

PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle University Volleyball team swept the NJIT Highlanders, 3-0, in the  first match of the La Salle Invitational on Friday night. The Explorers improved to 3-4 on the year, while NJIT fell to 1-7. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Samantha Graver put down seven kills in the first game to help the Explorers to a substantial 25-12 win over NJIT.
  • La Salle maintained its lead for the duration of the set, showcasing the team's defensive strength.
  • The Explorers allowed just three kills and held NJIT to -.103 hitting.
  • In the second set, Devin Corah had five kills and La Salle went on a 7-1 run to finish off the period and take a 2-0 advantage.
  • Corah also had two consecutive kills while Jensen Sharrits put down a service ace to help the Explorers climb to the lead in the third set.
  • Junior Kathryn Wood had 11 assists and La Salle scored 12 of the last 14 points en route to the win. 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Graver finished with a match-high 14 kills while Corah added 11.
  • La Salle outhit NJIT, .229 to -.057.
  • Wood closed with 36 assists.
UP NEXT
  • The second day of the La Salle Invitational will begin on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10:30 a.m. with a matchup between the Explorers and Kent State.
  • Competition will continue throughout the day as NJIT takes on Rider at 12:30 p.m. followed by a matchup between Kent State and NJIT at 5:00 p.m. Finally, the Explorers will take the court to challenge Rider in the last match of the invitational beginning at 7:00 p.m.
