PHILADELPHIA - La Salle University graduate student
Pookie Powell was named Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week for games contested from Dec. 16 through Jan. 1, the organization announced on Wednesday.
Powell was named MVP of the Boardwalk Battle just before Christmas as he helped the Explorers to a pair of victories over Alabama A&M and Towson. The 6-0 guard averaged 17.5 points and 4.0 steals per game, including an 18-point, 5-steal performance in the title game against Towson.
All told, Powell shot 11-for-19 (57.9%) from the floor and 11-for-12 (91.7%) from the foul line in the two wins. For his La Salle career, the Orlando, Fla. native has scored 998 points, just two shy of becoming the 57th player in school history to reach the mark.
The Explorers open Atlantic 10 play on Saturday, Jan. 5 at Massachusetts. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will air live on NBC Sports Network. The first home A-10 game of 2019 will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12 at Tom Gola Arena at TruMark Financial Center, when preseason favorite Saint Louis comes to town.
