Men’s Soccer Concludes Season in Atlantic 10 Quarterfinals

DAYTON, Ohio - The La Salle University men's soccer team went head on with the red-hot Dayton Flyers in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship on Sunday, falling 4-0 on the road. It was Dayton's seventh straight win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • La Salle held a 3-0 shot on goal advantage early and senior Pat McCarthy had two opportunities on net in the 14th minute, but Dayton goalkeeper Federico Barrios stopped both shots.
  • The Explorers held the Flyers without a shot on goal until the 34th minute. However, Dayton made it count as Kingsford Adjei found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
  • La Salle limited Dayton's chances in the opening half and entered halftime trailing by one despite holding a 6-5 shot advantage and a 3-1 shot on goal advantage.
  • Dayton made its second shot on target count as well though, with Daniel Dos Santos making it 2-0 with a 54th minute goal.
  • La Salle hung tough until Adjei tallied his second goal of the game in the 74th minute, however, and Jonas Fjeldberg stretched the advantage to 4-0 in the 84th minute to cap the scoring.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • La Salle held a 17-12 shot advantage for the game, but Dayton had the upper hand in shots on goal (5-4), including a 4-1 advantage in the second half.
  • McCarthy took four shots and had three of La Salle's four shots on goal in his final game in Blue and Gold.
  • Sophomore Ike Hollinger had the other shot on goal and classmate Tarin Morris took three shots. Freshman goalkeeper Carlos Mora made one save.
  • After being picked 13th in the A-10 preseason coaches' poll, the Explorers finished the year sixth in the league and earned their first postseason berth since 2016.
  • Comprised of mostly underclassmen, La Salle ends the season 8-9-1 overall, an improvement of five wins from last season. Head coach Rob Irvine's squad also won four more A-10 games this year than a season ago.
