Softball Sweeps Saturday Slate; Extends Win Streak to Three

CLEARWATER, Fla. – After a pair of wins on Saturday, the La Salle softball team (5-9) extended its win streak to three games. The Explorers defeated Quinnipiac, 11-1, in six innings and set down Army, 3-1.
 
Junior Emily Conaway led the squad, going 5-for-7 with a homerun, four RBIs, three doubles, and three runs scored over the two games.
 
La SALLE 11, QUINNIPIAC 1 – F/6 INNINGS
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle took an early lead after Conaway scored on a throwing error by the Bobcats' catcher.
  • Quinnipiac responded with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning to tie things at one apiece.
  • The game remained tied until the Explorers added 10 runs in the sixth. After the first three batters of the inning reached base, junior Courtney Shupp launched a pitch over the right field wall for her first career homer. Four batters later, Conaway hit a three-run shot to center field. Sophomore Ashley Mendenhall and freshmen Mackenzie Vogler and Cailey Joyce each recorded an RBI to end the scoring for the Explorers.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Joyce (3-3) picked up the win on a complete game. The rookie recorded a career high six strikeouts, while allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Conaway ended the game 3-for-4 with the homer and two doubles. She recorded three RBIs and two runs scored.
  • Shupp's grand slam was her only hit, while drawing a walk. Her four RBIs are the first of her career.
  • Mendenhall went 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI, and run.
  • Senior Emma Schweigert was 1-for-1, reaching on a walk and twice while hit by a pitch. She scored two runs and stole a base.
  • Freshman Natalie Rios recorded a double in three at bats and scored once.
  • Vogler notched an RBI single.
GAME NOTES:
  • Senior Jeryn Reese made her first career appearance pinch running in the sixth inning.
La SALLE 3, ARMY 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • La Salle plated two in the bottom of the first on two hits. After Conaway singled up the middle, Rios sent a 3-2 pitch down the left field line for an RBI double. Rios would later score on a passed ball.
  • Army cut the deficit to one in the top of the third. With two outs in the inning, the Black Knights registered three hits to bring in one.
  • Conaway bolstered the lead in the bottom of the sixth after sophomore Deanna Pineiro walked. Conaway sent a 2-2 pitch to left center for an RBI double.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Sophomore Morgan Orlowski (2-5) registered her second win on the season as she pitched a complete game. Orlowski set down three on strikes, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Conaway led the team, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and run scored.
  • Rios knocked an RBI double in a 1-for-3 outing with a run scored.
  • Schweigert and Vogler each registered a base hit.
  • Pineiro walked and scored a run.
UP NEXT:
La Salle finishes the USF/Clearwater Recreation Showcase Tournament on Sunday morning with a 9 a.m. tilt against Butler.
