PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle softball team (2-5) split its first day of the JU/UNF Spring Break Challenge with a win over Georgetown, 5-4, and a loss to Presbyterian, 10-1.
La SALLE 5, GEORGETOWN 4
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Explorers scored three in the top of the second inning. Freshman Cailey Joyce lined a one out double to left center to start the hitting efforts. Two batters later, sophomore Deanna Pineiro notched an RBI single to right center to score Joyce. With two on, junior Emily Conaway tripled down the right field line to drive in both runners.
- In the bottom half, Sarah Bennett hit a solo shot to get the Hoyas on the board.
- La Salle added one in the third, with senior Emma Schweigert scoring after an error by the Hoyas.
- Georgetown responded in the third by scoring three runs to tie things up at four apiece. The Hoyas scored on two walks, a passed ball, and two hits.
- The Explorers regained the lead in the fourth with freshman Audrey LaBouliere advancing to third on a single by classmate Natalie Rios. The shortstop botched the throw, bringing LaBouliere in.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Joyce pitched the complete game, allowing four runs and just one earned. The rookie gave up five hits and four walks, while striking out one.
INSIDE THE NUMEBRS:
- Conaway ended the day 2-for-2 with a triple, double, walk, and two RBIs.
- Pineiro went 1-for-3, collecting an RBI.
- LaBouliere was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk.
- Every Explorer recorded a hit in the game.
PRESBYTERIAN 10, La SALLE 1
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Blue Hose had two on the board before the Explorers cracked the scoreboard. Senior Emma Schweigert lauched her first homer of the year to put La Salle on the board.
- Presbyterian pulled away, scoring four in the sixth and four in the seventh.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Sophomore Morgan Orlowski (0-4) pitched the complete game, allowing 12 hits, 10 runs, six earned runs, and seven walks. Orlowski punched out two on the game.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Schweigert finished 2-for-2 with the long ball, RBI, and a walk.
- Junior Courtney Shupp picked up a pinch hit single for a 1-for-1 outing.
- Freshman Kaylee Piven recorded her first career start.
