Shupp, Joyce Use the Long Ball to Help Softball Claim Series Win Over Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. – Make it 13 straight victories for the La Salle softball team (12-29, 5-14 A-10) over Rhode Island (15-28, 4-13 A-10) with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. The Explorers took game one, 9-5, and game two, 6-3, in eight innings.
 
Junior Courtney Shupp recorded and extra innings three run homer in game two, while rookie Cailey Joyce launched a solo shot in each contest.
 
With the wins, La Salle has improved its conference record from a season ago and tied its win total with six games left to play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Sophomore Ashley Mendenhall put the Blue and Gold on the scoreboard in the first inning with an RBI double to centerfield.
  • Rhode Island answered in the home half with a two-run homer.
  • La Salle added three in the third to regain the lead 4-2. Junior Emily Conaway singled to right field to drive in a run and later stole home. Freshman Audrey LaBouliere scored the final run of the frame on a passed ball after reaching on a walk.
  • The home team responded in the fourth and retook the lead with three runs on four hits and two La Salle errors.
  • In the sixth, back-to-back doubles resulted in the first run of the inning as Joyce drove one in. Three batters later, Shupp sent a pitch through the left side for an RBI base knock. LaBouliere plated two more runs for the Explorers with a single to left to push the lead to 8-5.
  • Joyce added an insurance run in the seventh as she recorded her fifth homerun of the season.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  •  Joyce (8-13) picked up the win in the complete game effort. The rookie struck out a career high eight batters in game one and allowed five earned on 11 hits and a pair of walks.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Joyce, Mendenhall, and LaBouliere all recorded two hits in the game, with the rookies each recording two RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead.
  • La Salle cut the deficit in half during the third when senior Emma Schweigert doubled to right field to score LaBouliere.
  • Joyce homered in the fourth to knot things at two apiece.
  • Freshman Kaylee Piven came up with a two-out base knock to score the go-ahead run.
  • Rhode Island hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
  • During the top of the eighth, Shupp sent a three-run jack to right field to put the Explorers up by three.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
  • Sophomore Morgan Orlowski (4-14) set down five on strikes as she pitched seven innings and picked up the win. Orlowski allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks.
  • Joyce came in and pitched the bottom of the eighth and recorded her first career save.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • Schweigert and freshman Natalie Rios each went 3-for-4 in game two.
  • Schweigert had two doubles and an RBI.
  • Rios doubled and scored twice.
  • Shupp finished the game 1-for-2 with the three-run bomb and a walk.
UP NEXT:
La Salle looks to complete the sweep of Rhode Island on Sunday. First pitch has been moved up to 10 a.m. in anticipation of rain later in the day. If the Explorers can complete the sweep, it would be the team's first three-game conference sweep since the end of the 2016 season when they swept Rhode Island.
