AMHERST, Mass. – Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the La Salle softball team (7-22, 1-8 A-10) fell to UMass (18-14, 6-1 A-10), 8-2, on Sunday, completing the three-game sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- With junior Emily Conaway standing on second, sophomore Ashley Mendenhall ripped a pitch to left center for an RBI double to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead in the first.
- In the following inning, with the bases loaded and two away, Mendenhall reached on an error by the Minutewomen third basemen, forcing freshmen Audrey LaBouliere in from third.
- UMass answered in the fourth inning by scoring two runs on a hit and an error to tie the game at two apiece.
- The home team took a one run lead in the fifth and opened things up with a five run sixth inning.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Sophomore Morgan Orlowski (3-11) was credited with the loss after allowing just one earned run on five hits and two walks over 4.2 innings of work. Orlowski set down one on strikes.
- Freshman Cailey Joyce was brought on in relief, pitching 1.1 innings. Joyce allowed five earned runs on five hits and a pair of walks. The rookie struck out two on strikes.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Mendenhall and senior Emma Schweigert paced the Explorers, each going 2-for-4 in the game. Mendenhall had the RBI double.
- Conaway, Joyce, and freshman Kaylee Piven all recorded a 1-for-3 outing. Conaway scored a run and Joyce doubled.

La Salle returns to West Campus Field for a Wednesday doubleheader against the Drexel Dragons. Game one is slated for 2:30 p.m.
