PHILADELPHIA - After making his NBA debut with the Atlanta Hawks and signing contracts with a pair of teams during the 2018-19 season, former La Salle University men's basketball standout
B.J. Johnson readies for his second professional season, which is set to begin on Monday, July 1.
The 6-7 guard/forward will play for the Sacramento Kings in a pair of summer leagues, beginning with the California Classic in Sacramento. The three-day event features a six-game, round-robin schedule at the Golden 1 Center. In addition to the Kings, the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat will participate. All three Kings games will air live on NBA TV.
Following the California Classic, Johnson and the Kings will play in the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League in Las Vegas from July 5-15 at Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion, on the campus of UNLV. Sacramento is scheduled to square off against the Chinese National Team (July 6), the Dallas Mavericks (July 8), the Houston Rockets (July 9) and the Los Angeles Clippers (July 11).
The remainder of Sacramento's slate in Las Vegas will be determined based on the first four games as the top eight teams out of the 32 teams will be seeded for a tournament with a Championship Game played on Monday, July 15. Teams that do not qualify will play a consolation game.
A two-time All-Philadelphia Big 5 First Team selection, Johnson proved to be one of the top collegiate scorers in the city during his two years at La Salle. He averaged 20.8 points per game as a senior and, for his career, scored 1,070 points with the Explorers, one of 57 players in program history to surpass the 1,000-point plateau.
After signing with the Hawks on March 1, Johnson posted 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting in his NBA debut to help the Hawks to a 123-118 win over the Chicago Bulls on March 3. Over six games, the 6-7 guard/forward shot 50.0 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from three-point range while averaging 3.5 points per game (19.5 points per 40 minutes).
Johnson spent the majority of his first professional season with the Lakeland Magic of the NBA's G-League. In 39 regular-season games, he averaged 15.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest while shooting an impressive 44.4 percent from three. In a G-League playoff game against the Westchester Knicks, Johnson scored 20 points as the Magic advanced to the Eastern Conference finals.
