SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The La Salle softball team (0-4) fell in both of its games on Saturday with losses to USC Upstate (10-2), 2-0, and Virginia (7-4), 10-2.
USC Upstate 2, La Salle 0
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- USC Upstate took an early lead in the bottom of the first as it scored an unearned run with a single up the middle.
- In the bottom of the sixth, the Spartans doubled their lead after back-to-back hits resulted in a run.
AT THE PLATE:
- Freshman Lex Ortman had the lone hit for the Explorers on a 1-for-3 day at the plate.
- Senior Courtney Shupp worked a walk and went 0-for-1.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Sophomore Kelly Toomey (0-2) got the start. Toomey tossed four innings and struck out three. She allowed three hits, a walk, and an unearned run.
- Rookie Jenna Khantzian entered in the fifth and tossed the final two frames. Khantzian registered her first career strikeout and allowed one earned on three hits.
Virginia 10, La Salle 2
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Virginia tallied a run off of two hits in the bottom of the first for an early 1-0 lead.
- Senior Emily Conaway began the top of the second with a leadoff single to right before freshmen Victoria Zatko and Maddy Little walked. With the bases full and two away, Ortman reached on an error which allowed two to come home.
- The Cavaliers regained the momentum in the bottom portion as they added two runs. After a leadoff single and a walk, a bases clearing double brought in the runs to push the score to 3-2.
- Virginia scored runs in each of the next three innings to cut the game short after five.
AT THE PLATE:
- Junior Ashley Mendenhall went 2-for-3 to lead the Explorers at the dish.
- Conaway registered a base knock and a run scored.
- Rookie Natalie Rios made her first start of the season and collected a hit.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE:
- Khantzian (0-2) was credited with the loss after 2.1 innings of work. She recorded one strikeout while allowed seven earned runs on nine hits.
- Toomey pitched the final two frames and gave up two earned on three hits and a walk.

La Salle takes the field again at the Lobo Classic on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for a five-game weekend.
