PHILADELPHIA – Inspired by the national outcry for social justice reform in America, a group of Division I Athletic Directors have established the Black AD Alliance, including La Salle's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation Brian Baptiste.

"Given the racial injustices and outcry in the US around social and racial inequities, it is important for us to find ways to support one another," Baptiste said. "I am honored to be part of the Black AD Alliance. Working with this group of well-respected individuals throughout college athletics allows us to advocate and help in the development of up and coming athletic administrators, while working with national entities to establish protocols for addressing the lack of positions filled by minorities."

The Alliance, which is made up of approximately 50 black athletic directors, released its purpose statement and strategic priorities late last week. The purpose statement reads as follows:

"The Black AD Alliance is committed to promoting the growth, development, and elevation of Black athletics administrators at the Division I level. We engage industry decision-makers, provide exposure for aspiring Black college athletics professionals through purposeful mentoring, and foster connections with those who will aid in positioning leaders in intercollegiate athletics."

Among its strategic priorities include promoting the advancement of minority athletic administrators, partnering with NCAA senior leadership and NACDA, and collaborating with MOAA and other minority-focused advocacy organizations to combat social and racial inequalities.

In the 2019 Racial and Gender Report Card released by The Institute of Diversity and Ethics in Sports (TIDES), Blacks and Hispanics have been under-represented in college administration. Those positions include senior titles of associate or assistant AD for compliance, marketing, communications, academic services, ticketing, sports medicine and community relations.

Blacks held 8.7 percent of athletic director positions with Hispanics/Latinos at 2.7 percent. Blacks held 9.3 percent of assistant athletic director positions in 2018-19.

The Alliance is co-chaired by Auburn's Allen Greene and University of Missouri Kansas City's Brandon Martin. Collectively, a group of 15 executive committee members were established to help govern the organization. Among them, six will spearhead task forces which include: Allies, Pipeline/Recruitment, Social Justice, HBCUs, Student-Athlete Wellness & Development, and Ambassadors.
