Water Polo Earns 2-1 Start to MAAC Play

Lexington City, Va. – The La Salle Water Polo team began conference play with a 2-1 weekend at VMI. The Explorers claimed two victories on Saturday, but dropped their lone game on Sunday to Marist.

HOW IT HAPPENED – IONA (W, 12-4)  
  • Sofia Kolovou dominated the first quarter, scoring all three Explorer goals to put the team up 3-1.
  • Francesca Co' and Kolvou each added a goal in the second, with Tatum Lomax adding two more. La Salle took a 7-2 lead into the half.
  • Sara Quirante Talli and Grace Smith joined the fray to continue expanding the Blue & Gold lead in the third quarter, 9-3.
  • Ella Tice and Quirante Talli added to the total in the final frame to give La Salle an outstanding 12-4 victory in the conference opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MOUNT SAINT MARY'S (W, 9-8 (OT))  
  • La Salle fell behind early, 2-1, with Co' scoring the lone goal in the first quarter.
  • The Explorers allowed three more goals, putting the squad in a 5-1 hole. Martina Bonet Saez and Co' scored two goals late in the period to start the climb back into the action.
  • Claire Durham scored to trim the lead to one, before The Mount responded with two goals of their own. Durham scored with Kolovou adding another to set the score at 7-6 entering the final frame. The fourth quarter saw critical goal scored by Francesca Co' to tie the game at seven heading into overtime.
  • Kolovou added another before Mount St. Mary's tied things up. With 18 seconds remaining, captain Paige Mitchell buried the game-winner.
HOW IT HAPPENED – MARIST (L, 12-11)  
  • La Salle took a 2-1 lead in the first quarter with goals from Co' and Durham.
  • Marist outscored the Explorers 6-2 in the second quarter to take a 7-4 lead into the half. Smith and Bonet Saez found the back of the net for the Explorers.
  • The blue & gold dominated the third quarter. Co' and Kolovou scored the first two for the Explorers to cut the deficit to 8-6. Bonet Saez, Kolovou, and Lomax scored three of the final five to set the score at 10-9 entering the final frame.
  • Marist scored two of the first three in the final frame. La Salle's Co' added one more with 10 seconds left.
 
UP NEXT  
  • La Salle will play its annual MAAC home weekend, with two games on Saturday and two on Sunday.
