Water Polo Earns Four Wins in California

 Claremont, CA – The La Salle Water Polo team returned to play for the first time since the beginning of the month. The Explorers competed in the Claremont Convergence, where they played four games, proceeded by a match at Whittier college. La Salle posted a 4-1 record in their five games.

HOW IT HAPPENED – WHITTIER (W, 16-4)  
  • La Salle stormed out of the gate, going up 7-1 in the first quarter. Four Explorers scored, including Martina Bonet Saez, who earned a hat trick in the first quarter.
  • The second quarter featured more of the same, with La Salle outscoring the poets 4-1. Ella Tice and Carlotta Zandali were amongst those who scored for the team.
  • The second half featured less action as La Salle took its foot off the gas. 12 Explorers scored on the day
HOW IT HAPPENED – LA VERNE (W, 21-8)  
  • La Salle got out to a 6-3 lead in a tight first period. The Explorers led 4-3 with a minute remaining before two goals in the final sixty seconds set the tone for the rest of the match. Bonet Saez led the way with a first-quarter hat trick for the second straight game.
  • Lily Kirby blanked the Leopards in a 3-0 second quarter. Sofia Kolovou scored twice for La Salle.
  • La Verne struck first in a 5-2 third quarter. Kolvou put up three goals in addition to Lomax and Claire Durham scoring.
  • The Explorers blitzed the Leopards in the final quarter, scoring seven goals. Six different La Sallians found the back of the net, including two goals from Allie Hollo.
HOW IT HAPPENED – No. 10 UC IRVINE (L, 20-6)  
  • La Salle fell behind early, with the Anteaters taking a 10-3 lead into halftime. Co' scored twice.
  • The second half mirrored the first, with UCI outscoring La Salle 10-3. Co' again scored twice.
HOW IT HAPPENED – CAL STATE FULLERTON (W, 8-7)  
  • Cal State scored the first two goals of the game. Tatum Lomax scored twice followed by a dart from Sofia Kolovou to give La Salle a one point lead.
  • In the second quarter, the teams each scored once, with Bonet Saez earning the mark for La Salle.
  • The Explorers added back-to-back goals to start the 3rd from Co'. The Titans returned the favor to set the score at 6-5 heading into the final frame.
  • After scores from each side, the game was locked at seven. With one minute to go, Francesca Co' added the game winning goal on a penalty shot.
HOW IT HAPPENED – CONCORDIA (W, 16-10)  
  • Four different Explorers scored in the first quarter. The teams were tied at the end of one, 4-4.
  • Lomax and Kolovou scored two each as La Salle outscored Concordia 5-2 to take 9-6 lead at the end of one.
  • La Salle continued to build on the lead at the end of the third, outpacing Concordia 4-1. Bonet Saez scored twice.
  • Each team scored thrice in the final frame to give La Salle the win.
 
UP NEXT  
  • La Salle will play the first home game of its season on Friday, March 7 at 7 p.m. against Toronto. Admission is free to all fans.
