Water Polo Competes at Villanova

PHILADELPHIA  – The La Salle Water Polo team earned a 1-2 record as the Explorers competed at Villanova. La Salle won its only game at Siena on Saturday and lost both games played on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SIENA (W, 17-15)  
  • The blue & gold converted on four of the five goals scored in the first quarter. Four different players scored.
  • La Salle continued to expand its lead in the second, taking a 9-5 advantage into halftime.
  • Siena began to mount a comeback in the third quarter, closing the gap to two goals, 12-10.
  • Despite the Explorers scoring the first two goals of the fourth quarter, Siena knotted the game at 14. La Salle responded with goals from Francesca Co' and Martina Bonet Saez. After a Seina goal, Sara Quirante Talli slammed the door on a comeback.
  • Bonet Saez led the Explorers with five scores.
HOW IT HAPPENED – LIU (L, 14-12)  
  • The Sharks jumped out to a 4-1 advantage after the first period.
  • Despite goals from Co' and Sofia Kolovou, LIU expanded its lead to four, 8-4 by halftime.
  • The Explorers scored five goals in the third quarter to cut into the lead. LIU scored three of the first four goals to secure its largest lead of the game, 11-5. Four different Explorers scored the last four of the frame to trim the lead to two, 11-9, at the conclusion of the period.
  • LIU scored the first two once again to reestablish a firm lead. La Salle responded with three straight goals to slice the lead to one, 13-12. The Sharks added their 14th of the afternoon just seven seconds after La Salle scored to set the final at 14-12.
  • Kolovou led the Explorers with four goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED – VILLANOVA (L, 11-5)  
  • After a first period which saw La Salle fall behind, 5-2, La Salle played the Wildcats evens in the second frame, 2-2, to take a 7-4 deficit into the locker room.
  • The teams scored a goal each in the third period. La Salle did not find the back of the net in the fourth quarter.
  • Lomax scored twice.
