ERIE, PA – The La Salle women's water polo team picked up a pair of decisive victories at the Curtis Robinette Memorial Invitational on Saturday, defeating Gannon 20-13 before closing out the day with a 21-15 win against Washington & Jefferson.
Against Gannon, La Salle set the tone early, building a 6-3 lead after the opening quarter and maintaining control throughout the game.Â
The Explorers featured a balanced scoring effort with Martina Bonet Saez, Samara Eschleman and Andi Moriarity each scoring four goals.Â
Freshman attacker Nadya Azzopardi delivered a strong all-around performance with three goals and three assists, while junior goalkeeper Katelyn Cuthbert anchored the defense with seven saves and three steals in goal.
Sophomore utility player Lauren Ellis added two goals in the victory, while senior attacker Whitney Wood finished with three points, including two assists.
The Explorers carried their momentum into the afternoon matchup against Washington & Jefferson, quickly jumping ahead and never looking back.
Azzopardi scored a career-high five goals and added an assist.
Moriarity contributed three goals and two assists, while freshman attacker Claire McCulloch tallied two goals, a career-high five assists and a career-high three steals.
Bonet Saez and Wood each added two goals and two assists in the win. Eschleman also had a multi-goal game, finishing with two in the contest.
Freshmen goalkeepers Avery Rabago and Michaela Burroughs combined for 14 saves in net.Â
