Women's Water Polo Earns Two Victories On Sunday

ERIE, PA – The La Salle women's water polo team (7-1) extended its winning streak to five with a pair of commanding victories at the Curtis Robinette Memorial Invitational, defeating Wheaton 20-7 and Mercyhurst 14-5 on Sunday.

The Explorers' 7-1 start to begin a season is the best in program history.

Twelve different players found the back of the net, led by junior center Samara Eschleman who tallied three goals on four shots.

Against Wheaton, the Explorers set the tone early with a dominant first quarter, jumping out to a 9-2 lead.

Martina Bonet Saez, Amanda Fadil, Allie Hollo, Paige Mitchell, Grace Smith, and Ella Tice each added two goals in the victory.

In the cage, freshman goalkeeper Michaela Burroughs anchored the defense with seven saves. 

La Salle capped the doubleheader with another balanced effort, pulling away from Mercyhurst behind a 4-1 first-quarter start and closing with five fourth-quarter goals.

Freshman attacker Nadya Azzopardi powered the attack with a game-high five goals on nine shots.

Bonet Saez added two goals and two assists, and senior center defender Claire Durham added a goal and a game-high three assists.

Junior goalkeeper Lily Kirby recorded 13 saves and two assists from the cage.

The Explorers' defense limited Mercyhurst to just two goals in the second half and collected 13 steals, while eight different players recorded an assist in the win.

La Salle heads to California for four games at the Convergence Tournament on March 6.
