Women's Water Polo Splits Doubleheader On Saturday

FULLERTON, Calif. – La Salle women's water polo (9-3) turned in a strong tournament showing at the Convergence Tournament, edging Biola 7-6 before a narrow 11-10 loss to host Cal State Fullerton in a doubleheader at Titan Aquatics Center on Saturday.

La Salle opened the day with a dramatic win over Biola, highlighted by a hat trick from junior attacker Martina Bonet Saez and a standout performance by junior goalkeeper Lily Kirby, who tallied 13 saves.

The Explorers got additional goals from Grace Smith, Kira Braun, Claire McCulloch and Samara Eschleman to secure the win. Despite 11 team exclusions, La Salle limited Biola to just one power play goal on six tries.

In the nightcap, La Salle went goal-for-goal with Cal State Fullerton but came up just short in an 11-10 finish.

Freshman attacker Nadya Azzopardi powered the offense with five goals and two assists. Bonet Saez added her second hat trick of the day, while seniors Ella Tice and Claire Durham also found the back of the net. Smith registered a team-high three assists in the contest.

La Salle generated 29 shots and drew 13 exclusions, but the Titans made the most of their opportunities late in the contest. Kirby finished with 11 saves in the loss.

The Explorers will begin MAAC play at Kirk Pool, hosting Villanova on Wednesday, March 11 at 6:30 p.m. on Senior Day.
