McInerney enters his second season as an assistant coach for the La Salle men's rowing team in 2023-24. He joined La Salle in 2022 shortly after graduating from the university.
In his first season as an assistant coach working under head coach Ivo Krakic, McInerney was part of a coaching staff that was a finalist for the IRCA Staff of the Year award after helping the Explorers put together a historic spring season in which they had both their Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ boats finish ranked in the top 20 in the country for the first time in program history. In addition, McInerney guided the Explorers to 11 top-four finishes during the spring season.
McInerney was a rower for La Salle his entire four years. Being able to coach and improve the team he rowed for is personal for McInerney. “I’m having a great time. When I was on the team for four years, I saw the team grow a lot, and I’m excited to be a part of its future success."
Coaching is something that McInerney said he always kept in mind, and when head coach Ivo Krakic asked him to join his staff, he took the opportunity. “I think the last season I had, there was a ton of growth. We went to the national championship for the first time in 20 years as a team, and I was excited about the team’s success." After his last season, McInerney said, “It felt a little unfulfilled, and I wanted to see the team take off and be a part of that in some way.” In terms of how his experience has been so far as the assistant coach, he said, “I basically get to have fun every day and get paid for it.”
McInerney believes that making sure the student athletes have a great time while they’re here, both inside and outside of the sport, is the most important thing. He said that he and Coach Krakic are focused on giving the rowers “the full student athlete experience by helping them be successful academically and athletically.”
McInerney graduated with a BA in Political Science and Government, and with a double major in History and Politics, and Philosophy and Economics.
