Men 5th, Women 14th against Stiff Competition at Paul Short Invitational

La Salle runners kept their eyes on the prize against some of the top competition on the east coast as junior Korey Edwards (Morris Plains, NJ) raced to a 24:37 8K to finish in 13th place in the men's race at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh University to pace the Explorers to a fifth place overall finish out of 41 teams Friday afternoon. The women captured a 14th place overall finish out of 47 teams, led by graduate student Rachel Papin (Philadelphia, PA)who ran a 21:48 to grab 49th place in the 6K. Both the men and women were the top finishers of any Atlantic 10 team competing in the meet.

The La Salle men were one of three Philadelphia teams to finish in the top 10, as Villanova placed first and the University of Pennsylvania just barely beat out the Explorers for the fourth place position. Speedy performances by graduate student Edward Baynes (Verona, NJ) who finished in 24th place in 24:48, sophomore Trevon Rainford (Philadelphia, PA)in 44th place at 25:06 and senior David Alfano (West Orange, NJ) in 48th place at a 25:15 pace helped keep the Explorers at the head of the pack for a strong 5th place overall finish. Other top finishers for La Salle included junior Matthew Mitchell (Barrington, NJ) in 59th place, junior Ellis Wilson in 77th and senior Joe Fedorowicz (Abington, PA) in the 92nd slot.

Papin led the Explorer women against some of the toughest competition La Salle has faced so far this season, as Princeton (1), West Virginia (2), Texas Tech (3), and the University of Wisconsin (4) had the top female team finishes. Top individual finishers included senior Carolyn Lipovsky (Edison, NJ) in 56th place with a 21:52 finish, and senior Christa Plummer (Quakertown, PA) in 88th place with a 22:24 finish. The women were one of just three Philadelphia teams to place in the top fifteen.

The rest of the finishers included: freshman Kristina Kubula (East Fallowfie, PA) in 141st place, senior Mary Clare Parrott (Sayville, NY) in 164th place, senior Adriana Boyle (Havertown, PA) in 179th place and senior Elisabeth Mayer (Bradley Beach, NJ) in 225th place.

The Explorers will next head to the Penn State Open on Friday, October 12th in State College, PA.
