Plumhoff's PK in Second OT Lifts Explorers Past Rhody, 2-1

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Sophomore Jason Plumhoff (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) sank a penalty kick goal with exactly five minutes remaining in the second overtime period as the La Salle men's soccer team topped Rhode Island 2-1 in Atlantic 10 action on Friday night. Plumhoff's score was his team-leading fifth of the season, and teammate Jordan Torres (Etters, Pa./Red Land) netted his first of the season.

La Salle keeper John McCarthy (Cinnaminson, N.J./Northeast Catholic) also tied a career high and set a season high with 14 saves. He has recorded double-digit saves in three of the last four games.

The Explorers are now 4-1-2 in their last seven games.

Torres put the Explorers (4-6-2, 2-0-1 Atlantic 10) up 1-0 in the 39th minute. Ryan Sepe (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) dribbled down the left side of the field and flicked the ball to Dan Korenyi (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson), who crossed the ball to Torres. Torres finished the score with a low liner to the left side of the net.

Rhode Island's Jamie Eckmayer tied it up in the 49th minute. McCarthy came out to pick up the ball, but Eckmayer got a foot on it and kicked it to the far right corner of the net.

Both squads had several chances to win it in regulation. The Rams (4-7-1, 1-1-1 Atlantic 10) put up 13 shots in the second stanza, with eight of those being saved by McCarthy. The Explorers turned up the offensive pressure in the last few minutes, rattling off four straight shots in the final four minutes of regulation. Their best chance came when a Ram foul with about 30 seconds remaining caused a La Salle throw-in from the 25. Andrew Weyerhaeuser (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) threw a long ball in to Sepe, who just missed the net with a high ball.

The two overtime periods were evenly matched. The Rams had the best chance of winning it in the first overtime when Mike Casey took a point blank shot from about 10 yards out, but McCarthy came up with the diving save. Joey Haught also recorded a shot-on-goal in the 104th minute, but McCarthy once again stopped the ball.

The feisty game concluded when a Ram defender pulled an Explorer down in the box and was whistled for the foul and penalty kick. Plumhoff calmly sank the PK into the left side to give the Explorers the win, their second A-10 victory of the season.

Rhode Island held a 23-16 advantage on shots and 7-1 on corner kicks. Ram keeper Peyton Warwick made one save while taking the loss in net.

The Explorers remain home on Sunday as they host Massachusetts at 1:00 PM.
