Box Score PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer team played to its second scoreless draw of the season, this time against Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. Sophomore keeper
John McCarthy (Cinnaminson, N.J./Northeast Catholic) recorded 11 saves in the tie, the fourth of the last five games he has saved 10 or more.
The Explorers (4-6-3, 2-0-2 Atlantic 10) and Minutemen (4-9-1, 1-1-1 Atlantic 10) were evenly matched, with UMass holding a slim 21-19 advantage on shots. La Salle won the corner kick battle, 7-3.
UMass had an early chance at getting on the board as a David Key shot in the 12th minute ricocheted off the crossbar. The Minutemen also recorded two shots on goal in the second overtime period, but McCarthy came up with both stops.
The Explorers almost had it in the 92nd minute when
Andrew Weyershaeuser (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) lined a grounder that hit the net just to the right of the right post. That set off a celebration as the bench and crowd thought the ball went in, but it just missed.
Jason Plumhoff (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) led the Explorers with five shots and Hellah Sidibe paced the Minutemen with seven.
The Explorers return home next Friday (10/21) when they host Charlotte at 7:00 PM.
