Men's Soccer Senior Day vs. Saint Louis Gallery
PHILADELPHIA -
Kameron Teel scored two goals just 24 seconds apart and
Dan Korenyi netted the golden goal as the La Salle men's soccer team rallied from a two-goal deficit to down Saint Louis in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Stadium. The Explorers improve to 5-6-4 overall and remain unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play at 3-0-3, while the Billikens drop to 5-8-1 overall and 3-3 in the A-10.
The Explorers are now 5-1-3 in their last nine games, and 8-0-4 in their last 12 regular season conference games dating back to Oct. 22, 2010.
Saint Louis controlled the offense in the first half, as Robbie Kristo netted two goals to put the visitors up 2-0 at the break. Kristo headed in a goal in the 13th minute and grounded in a second one in the 36th minute. The Billikens outshot the Explorers 9-5 in the first half.
The Explorer offense came alive in the second half as the team rattled off 15 second half shots. Teel broke through at the 77:08 mark, taking a pass from
Rob Friskey near the 25 yard line and sank it just inside the right post. Just 24 seconds later,
Dan Korenyi found Teel, who headed the ball over Billiken keeper Nick Shackelford. Shackelford came out from the net to challenge Teel, but Teel's header went over him and rolled into the net to lock the score up at 2-2.
The Billikens' Jon Roeckle nearly won it in the first overtime period when his shot ricocheted off the left post. Neither team had any significant opportunity in the remainder of the first overtime. The Billikens rattled off two straight shots six seconds apart in the 101st minute, but
John McCarthy came up with two huge stops.
Less than a minute later, Saint Louis was whistled for a foul, setting up a
Jason Plumhoff free kick. Plumhoff sent the ball into the box and Korenyi got a piece of it, heading it into the upper right 90 and setting off an Explorer celebration as the squad closed out the home portion of the schedule with the win.
The Explorers outshot the Billikens 23-18, while Saint Louis edged La Salle 5-2 on corner kicks.
McCarthy made eight stops to pick up the win, while Shackelford stopped six.
The Explorers head on the road for the remaining three regular season games. First up is Fordham next Friday (10/28) before heading across town to Temple (11/4) and Saint Joseph's (11/6).
