Box Score Box Score

DAYTON, Ohio
- A seventh minute goal by Jason Plumhoff (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) proved to be the game-winner and the La Salle men's soccer team went on to defeat Dayton, 2-0, to open the Atlantic 10 season on Friday night at Baujan Field. Nick Becker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) also netted his first goal, an insurance tally in the 81st minute.

The Explorers, who recorded their second straight shutout over the Flyers, wasted no time in getting on the board. Plumhoff beat the defense on the outside and drilled a shot into the back of the net at the 6:54 mark, his team-leading fourth score of the season.

The game stayed fairly even after that, with Dayton (1-10, 0-1) taking eight first half shots to the Explorers' six. The Flyers threatened early in the second half with two straight shots-on-goal, but John McCarthy (Cinnaminson, N.J./Northeast Catholic) came up with both stops.

The Explorers (3-6-1, 1-0) got an insurance goal in the 81st minute when Kameron Teel (Glassboro, N.J./Immaculata) crossed the ball into the box and Becker finished it with a low shot at the far post.

The Flyers threatened once more with two straight corner kicks in the 87th minute, both leading to shots. Michael Deyhle's shot hit the post at the 86:40 mark, but the Flyers stayed off the board to give the Explorers the shutout.

Dayton held an 18-12 edge on shots and the teams were even with three corner kicks each.

McCarthy recorded his third shutout of the season, making six saves in the effort. Chris Najeway stopped two shots while taking the loss for the Flyers.

The Explorers stay in Ohio through the weekend, taking on No. 23 Xavier on Sunday at 1:00 PM in a rematch of the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship title game.
