ST. LOUIS, Mo. -
Jason Plumhoff secured his fourth game-winning goal on a penalty kick and
Rob Friskey added an insurance goal as the fifth-seeded La Salle men's soccer team upended fourth-seeded Temple in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Saint Louis University on Thursday night. The Explorers advance to meet No. 2 George Washington at 8:30 PM Eastern (7:30 PM Central) on Friday in the conference semifinal.
The two squads met in Ambler just six days ago with Temple (9-10) winning 1-0 on a penalty kick, but the Explorers (7-8-4) responded tonight with stellar defense and timely scoring to end the Owls' season.
Plumhoff converted the game-winning penalty kick in the 67th minute, marking his team-leading seventh goal of the season and fourth game winner.
Friskey came up big in the 86th minute, adding an unassisted insurance goal to fend off a feisty Owl squad. He took the ball up the left side and directed a low kick across into the right side of the net from 10 yards out.
The Owls had plenty of chances as they outshot the Explorers 25-14, including 13-5 in the second half, but sophomore keeper
John McCarthy recorded 11 saves including a couple at point-blank range to preserve the win and his sixth shutout of the season and 14th of his career.
The Explorers return to action tomorrow night at 7:30 PM, taking on George Washington in the Atlantic 10 semifinal round. The two squads did not meet in the regular season. The game will be streamed for free on atlantic10.com.
