PHILADELPHIA – La Salle will travel just 16 miles for its next contest, a Big 5 game against Villanova on Tuesday, November 15 at 7 PM. The game will be broadcast online at ESPN3.com with Scott Graham and Dereck Whittenburg on the call.
Scouting the Explorers (1-0, 0-0 Big 5)
La Salle opened up a 43-20 half-time lead and never looked back in defeating Lafayette, 79-53, in the home opener on Friday night. Sophomore
Tyreek Duren had 15 of his 17 points before halftime and added six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Duren was named to the A-10 Honor Roll for his performance.
Tuesday's game is the earliest in series history and the second earliest Big 5 game (behind Monday's Penn-Temple clash).
The Explorers will be without junior
Ramon Galloway on Tuesday. Galloway suffered a concussion with 2:07 remaining in the first half on Friday while defending a drive.
Senior
Earl Pettis had 16 points, while junior
Taylor Dunn came off the bench to score a career-high 12 points. Senior
Devon White had nine points and a career-best nine boards.
Sophomore
Sam Mills also reached double-figures with 10 points, while freshman
D.J. Peterson collected a career-high seven rebounds.
La Salle turned up the defense, holding the Leopards to 36% shooting, including 30% in the first half.
Head coach
Dr. John Giannini has 396 wins and needs four more to reach 400 for his career.
Scouting Villanova (1-0, 0-0 Big 5)
Villanova is coming off a 106-70 win over Monmouth in its season opener. The Wildcats return Wooden Award candidate Maalik Wayns, who had 15 points on Friday. Dominic Cheek scored a career-high 27 points while Mouph Yarou had 24 points and 10 rebounds. VU is coming off a 21-12 season in 2010-11 and its seventh straight NCAA appearance.
As in many Big 5 matchups, there are several connections.
Tyreek Duren and Maalik Wayns are second cousins, while Duren and Markus Kennedy played together on Team Final AAU. They also are neighbors.
The Series
Villanova owns a 34-26 advantage in the all-time series, but La Salle is 5-4 all-time at The Pavilion. Thirty-eight of the previous 60 meetings were at the Palestra and five were at the Spectrum. Jay Wright (Hofstra) and
Dr. John Giannini (Maine) also coached against each other in the America East Conference in 2000-01.
