PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle men's basketball team is back in action on Saturday when it hosts James Madison at 3 PM at Tom Gola Arena in the first game of the Philly Hoop Group Classic. The game also serves as part of the University's Homecoming celebration and will be followed by the women's basketball team hosting Rutgers at 7 PM.
Scouting the Explorers (1-1)
The Explorers took Villanova to overtime on Tuesday before falling to the Wildcats, 76-69, despite career-highs from sophomores
Tyreek Duren and
Sam Mills. Duren scored 24 points, while Mills had 19 for La Salle.
Duren has an outstanding start to his second season on 20
th and Olney, averaging 20.5 ppg. and 5.5 apg. He is fourth in the A-10 in both categories.
Mills (14.5 ppg.) and senior
Earl Pettis (14.0) also average double-figures for the Blue and Gold. Senior
Devon White is averaging 8.5 rpg and leads the team with four blocks.
LU has made defense a priority this winter and has held its opponents to 35.6% shooting from the floor and 21.2% shooting from behind the arc.
Junior
Ramon Galloway, who suffered a concussion last Friday versus Lafayette, is doubtful for Saturday's game. He also missed the Villanova game.
Head coach
Dr. John Giannini has 396 wins and needs four more to reach 400 for his career.
Scouting James Madison (1-0)
James Madison is coming off an 82-73 home victory over Canisius on Sunday thanks to 26 points from Humpty Hitchens and 23 from A.J. Davis. Julius Wells added 13.
The Dukes, coached by former Saint Joseph's assistant Matt Brady, went 21-12 last year reaching the CBI?Tournament.
JMU was picked to finish fifth in the CAA this season. The Dukes will return home on Tuesday to host Robert Morris before returning to Philadelphia for the remainder of the Philly Hoop Group Classic on Friday and Saturday at the Palestra.
James Madison returns four starters and 69 percent of its scoring from a year ago. Wells and Hitchens combined for 125 of JMU's 199 three-point field goals last year. Wells averaged 10.7 points per game along with 4.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Hitchens also had an outstanding season for the Dukes averaging 8.9 points and 2.0 assists.
The Series
La Salle holds a 5-1 lead in the all-time series and is 2-0 in Philadelphia. The teams haven't met since the 2005-06 season, a 70-58 La Salle victory in Harrisonburg, VA.
