PHILADELPHIA – Junior
Ramon Galloway had a career-high 26 points on blistering 10-for-12 shooting from the field to help the La Salle men's basketball team defeat Army, 76-64, on Saturday at Tom Gola Arena. The win is the seventh straight at Gola Arena, tying a facility record for consecutive wins.
The Explorers have now won five consecutive games, the longest since a six-game winning streak from January 29 to February 18, 2006.
“I knew he was going to help us a lot in terms of depth, energy and flexibility in the line-up,” head coach
Dr. John Giannini said of Galloway. “He does a lot for the team that goes way beyond the stat sheet.”
Galloway was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field during the first half with his only miss of the half coming from the foul line. He would also add a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.
“It feels good,” Galloway said. “I put in a lot of practice with my coach in the morning and he always said that if you put in the work, the results will show. It feels good to have a great game, but I'm just happy for my team.”
Defensively, the Explorers (7-3) held the Black Knights to .386 shooting from the field and had 28 defensive rebounds to Army's 23.
“I'm pleased that we held them in the 30s [percent shooting],” Giannini said. “That's always a point of pride for a defensive team.”
The Explorers used effective three-point shooting to take an early lead. La Salle got its first 12 points off three treys by Galloway and one by senior
Earl Pettis (18 points) to lead 12-2 at the 15:47 mark of the first half.
The Blue and Gold would go on to sink a season-high 15 treys, shooting .517 as a team from beyond the arc. La Salle would shoot .538 from the field overall.
“We have good guards and they're able to make shots,” Giannini said. “They've been putting a lot of time in the gym getting up extra shots.”
Army got as close as 10 points with 3:37 to play in the first half with three straight treys.
However, Galloway answered for the Explorers with a basket of his own from beyond the arc to make the score 40-27 in favor of La Salle. The Explorers took a 48-36 lead into the half.
Josh Herbeck added a layup for Army at the opening of the second to again cut the lead to 10, but that was the closest the Black Knights would get.
La Salle held a double-figure lead throughout the half and took its largest lead of the game at 21 with 8:16 to go.
For the Black Knights, Ella Ellis chipped in 19 points. Herbeck and Jordan Springer joined him in double figures with 10 each. Army falls to 1-5 away from its home court this season.
The Explorers will have a break from competition during final exams. Their next contest will be December 19 at Delaware.
