PHILADELPHIA – La Salle will look to break the Gola Arena record for consecutive wins when it hosts Boston University on Thursday night at 7 PM. The Explorers have won seven straight in the facility, tying the record set from January 29 to November 21, 2006.
LU has won six of its last seven contests, with the only set back being a 70-66 loss at Delaware last Monday.
Scouting the Explorers (8-4)
The Blue and Gold will have played just two games in the past 19 days when it takes the court against BU. Last time out, the Explorers raced to an early lead and handed Central Connecticut State an 85-59 loss on Thursday.
Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week
Jerrell Wright had a career-high 21 points and added nine boards to lead La Salle, while junior
Ramon Galloway scored 15.
It was the fourth win by 20 points or more this season, which is more than the past two seasons combined and the most by a La Salle squad since the 1991-92 team won seven games by 20 or more.
Head coach
Dr. John Giannini's contingent is the only team in the A-10 ranked in the top four in scoring (74.8, second) and scoring defense (62.8, fourth). La Salle's eight wins before the new year ties the most during Giannini's tenure with two games to play.
Galloway continues to lead the team in scoring at 15.0 ppg. and ranks second in the Atlantic 10 in three-point percentage (.500) and three's per game (2.8). La Salle is 7-2 with him in the lineup and 1-2 without him.
Senior
Earl Pettis chips in with 13.8 ppg., while sophomore
Sam Mills, who has made a three in 12 straight contests, added 12.4 ppg. Sophomore
Tyreek Duren averages 12.1 ppg. and a team high 4.4 apg.
Scouting the Terriers (4-8)
Boston University has dropped four straight contests after falling to Bucknell, 75-61, on Thursday. Former Explorer Darryl Partin leads the team in scoring at 20.8 ppg. and is second in the conference.
D.J. Irving adds 12.6 ppg. but missed the Bucknell game with injury. The Terriers are coming off an America East Championship and NCAA bid in 2011. First year head coach Joe Jones replaced Pat Chambers, who left for Penn State in the offseason.
There are numerous connections between the two teams. Duren and Irving are close friends and were AAU teammates. Partin played his first two seasons at La Salle (2007-08 & 2008-09) and seven Terriers have Philadelphia connections: Matt Griffin
(Narberth, Pa.), D.J. Irving (Chester, Pa. / Archbishop Carroll), Chris Kurz (Philadelphia, Pa. / Penn Charter), Dom Morris (Friends Central), Darryl Partin (La Salle), Travis Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa. / Friends Central), Mike Terry, Jr. (Philadelphia, Pa. / Northeast Catholic).
The series
La Salle leads the all-time series 2-1 and this will be the first meeting in Philadelphia. The Explorers won 84-81 last year in Boston and the first two meetings were in the 1983 NCAA Tournament and the 1997 Tribune Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
Next up
La Salle will have little time to rest as it hosts Hartford on December 31 at 2 PM.
