PHILADELPHIA - As summer ramps up and La Salle's student-athletes are taking time away from the court, field, pitch or pool, we have an opportunity to reflect on an entire school year's worth of triumphs. From Atlantic 10 Tournament appearances to Academic All-Americans and success on the local and regional level, La Salle student-athletes have a lot from the 2010-11 year to be proud of.
To that end, those of us at GoExplorers.com present a summer web series of the Top 11 moments or accomplishments of the past school year. Every few days, a new "top moment" will be released. At the conclusion of the release of all 11, La Salle fans will have the opportunity to vote on which moment or accomplishment they think was the top one of 2010-11.
This week turns us to the rowing team, where the women's novice eight put together a terrific season capped off by a semifinal appearance in the historic Dad Vail Regatta.
The month of April was a big one for the novices. They kicked off the month with a silver medal at the UConn meet with a time of 7:20.91 followed by advancing to the grand final a week later at the Knecht Cup. At the Knecht Cup, they finished third in their heat to qualify for the semifinal, where they also finished third to advance to the grand final and ultimately take fifth.
Following the Knecht Cup was an exciting day on the Cooper River at the Atlantic 10 Championship. The novices finished third to take home the bronze medal, the first medal for a La Salle novice eight boat since the Explorers joined the Atlantic 10. The A-10 boat was coxed by
Maura Green and rowed by
Elizabeth Campanella,
Chelsea Bradley,
Madeline Haaga,
Mary Pat Conville,
Johanna Beck,
Emily Loughlin,
Eileen Dwyer and
Colleen Hamill.
The novices rounded out the month of April with another silver medal, this time at the Bergen Cup, where they finished within three seconds of the gold.
Following the novices' performance at Dad Vails, where they advanced to the semifinal, Head Coach Larry Connell said: ""It was a strong performance on the freshmen part. We have a young team and we have a lot of potential in our future."
