PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer team opens up the home portion of its 2011 schedule on Friday night when the Explorers host crosstown and Soccer Six rival Penn at McCarthy Stadium at 7:30 PM, before heading to Bucknell on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
The Explorers are coming off of a tough 3-1 defeat at Rutgers. The Blue and Gold were up 1-0 on
Kameron Teel's 40th minute goal, the first for the junior striker in an Explorer uniform after transferring from Immaculata University. They played terrific ball and were looking for the W when Rutgers broke through in the 76th minute and flurried in three goals in six minutes.
The Explorers look to bounce back on Friday, and will have no easy task in doing so against their city rivals. Penn took a 5-0 win in last season's meeting of the teams and returns five starters from a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, including the top four point scorers. Friday's contest is the season opener for the Quakers.
The team then heads on the road for the first of four straight away contests, traveling to Lewisburg on Sunday to take on defending Patriot League champion Bucknell. The teams squared off at McCarthy Stadium last season with the Bison taking a 3-1 decision. The Bison also return pivotal players from their run to the NCAA Tournament, including 2011 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Brendon Burgdorf. The Bison are coming off of a 3-1 loss to Binghamton in their season opener.
