PHILADELPHIA - La Salle and Penn combined for 38 shots on Friday night, but it was the Quakers who came away with the 2-0 decision at McCarthy Stadium in Soccer Six action.
Penn got on the board quickly as Stephen Baker found the back of the net just 3:40 into the contest. He took a pass from Christian Barreiro at the top of the box and dribbled from right to left before sinking the ball into the back left corner of the net.
The Explorers settled down after that, rattling off seven straight shots from 14:19 to 23:12 before the Quakers had another chance.
Jason Plumhoff,
Jeff Pio and
Tom Baker each recorded two shots in that rally. The Quakers regained some momentum to rattle off a series of shots themselves, but goalie
John McCarthy came up with the saves. In the first half alone, McCarthy registered nine saves.
Both teams had their chances in the second half, but it was a penalty kick by Barreiro that gave the Quakers the insurance in the 69th minute.
La Salle had one more terrific opportunity when freshman
Rob Friskey rocketed the ball toward the net from point-blank range in the 89th minute, but Quaker keeper Max Kurtzman made the stop.
Each team recorded 19 shots, with Baker leading the Explorers with four. Friskey, Pio and
Dan Korenyi recorded three apiece. Barreiro led Penn with five and Stephen Baker added four.
McCarthy suffered the loss in goal, recording nine saves, all in the first half.
Jim Clark also saw action between the posts, replacing an injured McCarthy in the 72nd minute and recording one save. Kurtzman was credited with the win in goal for Penn, stopping eight shots.
The Explorers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 4, when they play at Bucknell in the first of four straight road games. Kickoff against the Bison is set for 1:00 PM.
