Box Score PHILADELPHIA - The defense was stellar on Sunday, but the La Salle men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking overtime decision at Bucknell, 2-1. The defense fended off 28 Bison shots, limiting the hosts to one regulation goal before falling 48 seconds into overtime.
Following a 66-minute lightning delay less than midway through the first half,
Jeff Pio put the Explorers on the board in the 43rd minute.
Jason Plumhoff sent a free kick into the box, finding Pio who headed the ball in for his first goal of the season.
Bucknell responded two minutes later when Mayowa Alli connected in his first of two goals today, this time in the same manner as the Explorers' goal. Brendan Burgdorf sent in a free kick and found Alli, who headed the ball in from just outside the 18 yard line.
Following a scoreless second half, the Bison scored 48 seconds into the first overtime period for the final 2-1 score when Alli headed in a ball off of a corner kick from Joe Meyer.
The Explorer defense held strong despite 28 shots from Bucknell, including 18 in the first half. The Explorers recorded 10 shots in the game.
Jim Clark, who got the start in place of an injured
John McCarthy, made 12 saves in the loss including nine in the first half. Tommy Caso was credited with the win in goal, stopping two shots.
The Explorers return to action next Friday (9/9) when they play Iona in the first of two games at the Lafayette Puma Classic in Easton, Pa. Kickoff is set for 4:30 PM.
