PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle women's basketball team, winner of four straight, look to make it five in a row and start 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play when the Explorers host Fordham on Wednesday with a noon tipoff at Tom Gola Arena.
The Explorers hold a commanding 32-8 lead in the series with the Rams, which dates back to 1984, though the Rams have won three of the last five. The squads split the two-game series last season, with each team winning on its home court. The Rams took the first game 69-54 at Rose Hill Gym on Jan. 8, before the Explorers won by an identical 69-54 score on Feb. 6 at Gola Arena.
Scouting La Salle (7-9, 1-0 Atlantic 10)...
The Explorers are coming off their fourth straight win and Atlantic 10 opening victory at Saint Louis on Saturday. After trailing the entire game,
Ruvanna Campbell rolled in a layup and converted the and-one with 27 seconds remaining to give the Explorers their first lead at 53-52. The defense stifled the Billikens on the other end of the court, preventing a possible SLU shot, and the score held up.
Although she came up huge offensively at the end, Campbell continues to lead the La Salle defense. She has pulled down double-digit rebounds in four of the last five games and seven times overall, and averages 9.1 per contest which ranks her second in the Atlantic 10. With two blocks against the Billikens on Saturday, she now has 30 on the season which moved her into eighth on La Salle's all-time single season blocks list. She averages 2.0 rejections per game, also ranking her second in the conference.
Offensively,
Nadia Duncan has been the story as of late. After averaging just 6.5 points per game over the first 12 games, she has averaged 12.5 in the Explorers' four-game win streak and 15.5 ppg in the last two games. She has shot a blistering 62.9 percent over that four-game stretch.
Alexis Scott continues to lead in overall scoring, averaging 13.0 ppg on the season, while
Brittany Wilson adds 12.8. Wilson and Duncan also chip in a team second-best 4.4 rebounds per contest.
Scouting Fordham (9-7, 0-1 Atlantic 10)...
After going 9-6 in nonconference play, the Rams opened the Atlantic 10 season with a 54-43 loss at George Washington. Arielle Collins led the Rams with 15 points, while three players added eight rebounds each.
The Rams find themselves in defensive battles, as they average just 51.5 team points per game but hold opponents to only 49.6 points.
Despite the difficulty in scoring, three players average in double figures, led by Becky Peters with 11.2 ppg. Collins adds 11.1 and Abigail Corning nets 10.7.
Charlotte Stoddart paces the Fordham defense, pulling down a team-best 6.9 rebounds while chipping in 6.1 points. She has also recorded a team-best 22 blocks, and has committed only nine personal fouls in 16 games while averaging over 34 minutes per game.
