Men's Soccer Takes A-10 Show on the Road at GW and Charlotte

PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle men's soccer squad heads on the road this weekend, taking on George Washington today at 3 p.m. and traveling to No. 22 Charlotte on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest.

Scouting the Explorers

The Explorers are coming off back-to-back wins, including a 1-0 overtime victory over Fordham to open the Atlantic 10 season. Jidell Roach converted a rebound in the 97th minute for the game's only score and his first goal of the season, and John McCarthy won the battle of the conference's top goalkeepers to record his league-leading sixth shutout.

McCarthy lowered his goals against average to 0.69, third in the A-10, while leading the conference in shutouts, save percentage and total saves. He ranks fourth nationally with his .881 save percentage and 18th nationally in the goals against average. His six shutouts on the season is best in the A-10, two more than the second place goalies (there is a three-way tie for second with four shutouts each).

The Explorers sit at 7-2-2 overall, off to one of their best starts in program history, second only to the 1996 squad that went 9-1-1 through 11 games.

Joe Farrell leads the squad with nine points on three goals and three assists, having added an assist on Roach's game winner against Fordham. Jason Plumhoff is second with eight points on three goals and two assists.

Scouting the Colonials

George Washington enters the game at 4-7-0 and split its pair of contests on the first weekend of A-10 play. The Colonials snapped a four-game skid with a 2-1 win over Richmond on Friday before falling 3-0 to VCU.

The Colonials have won just one of their last six and are 1-3 at home.

Seth Rudolph leads the squad with four goals, while Tyler Ranalli has added three goals and an assist.

JP van der Merwe and Alejandro Almodovar have split goalkeeping duties. In 585 minutes, van der Merwe has recorded a 1.69 goals against average with 39 saves and one shutout. Almodovar has played 421 minutes in net, recording a 1.71 GAA with 30 saves and one shutout.

Scouting the 49ers

Charlotte, ranked 22nd in the latest NSCAA national poll, split a pair of matches in the opening weekend of A-10 play. The 49ers dropped a 4-1 game at VCU on Friday before rebounding with a 2-0 blanking of Richmond on Sunday.

Giuseppe Gentile leads the squad in scoring with four goals and an assist. Donnie Smith has added eight points on three goals and two assists, with Jennings Rex chipping in seven points on three goals and one assist.

Klay Davis has played every minute in net for the 49ers, recording a 1.00 GAA and .707 save percentage. He is tied for second in the league with four shutouts.

The Niners have outshot their opponents 177-93, and has a commanding 87-37 advantage on corner kicks.

The Explorers return home next weekend, hosting Richmond on Friday (10/19) at 7 p.m. and VCU on Sunday (10/21) at 1 p.m.
