PHILADELPHIA – The La Salle women's swimming and diving program is ready to kick off the 2012-13 season with tomorrow's home dual meet against Drexel on 20 October. The Explorers look to continue its success from last season with the addition of three newcomers in the freshman class.
“Both teams look to build on the success of the 2011-12 season,” said head coach
Matt Nunnally. “A great preseason of work has built an atmosphere of enthusiasm around the teams for the upcoming season. The women's team will look to the strength in the upper classes to provide leadership for the upcoming season with the expectation of climbing the podium at the A10 Championships.”
The women's squad saw two swimmers crowned 2012 Atlantic 10 Champions. The team was led by individual champions
Elizabeth Jordan and
Colleen Larkin. Jordan took gold in the 100 yard breaststroke in a school record time of 1:03.02 while Larkin ended her first A10 Championship with a victory in the 1650 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 16:48.64.
In addition to her victory, Jordan smashed five other school records during the course of the 2012 A10 Championship including the 50 and 200 yard freestyles, 200 yard medley relay, 200 yard freestyle relay, and the 800 yard freestyle relay.
Jessica Simunek claimed the 100 yard butterfly school record in a time of 55.93 which was good for a bronze medal at A10s. She also swam the butterfly leg on the school record-breaking 200 medley relay.
The Explorers brought aboard three freshmen for the 2012-13 season.
Hayley Miles joins freshman Cameron Edling as the Canadian representatives for the swim and dive program. Frenchwoman
Oceane DiBernardo will be the first European to compete for the Explorers in recent memory and the lone American freshman for the women's team is diver
Kelly Quinn.
Returning seniors include
Olivia Armater,
Meghan Forlini, Liz Jordan,
Jessica Simunek, and
Stephanie Wirtshafter.
The Explorers begin their season at home against Drexel on 20 October and end in Geneva, Ohio at the 2013 Atlantic 10 Championship on 20-23 February. The swim and dive program has a total of eleven meets during the course of the season including the 2012 USA Swimming Winter Nationals held in Austin, Texas beginning 29 November.
