Explorers Swim And Dive Secures Sweep Over Monmouth

West Long Branch, NJ — The La Salle swimming teams concluded their regular season Saturday morning, earning a sweep over Monmouth at the Steadman Natatorium. The Explorers claimed convincing victories on both sides, as the women won 163–82 and the men secured a 139–122 decision.

On the women's side, La Salle set the tone immediately with a sweep of the 200-yard medley relay. The relay team of seniors Rosalia Marin Martinez, Carlota Ungo, Felicia Rogell, and Emma Van Selm touched first in 1:44.21, while the other Explorers relay teams finished right behind to place second and third.

Individually, La Salle controlled the middle-distance events. Senior Thilda Strom earned a win in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:24.57), while sophomore Beren Celik captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.92) and later added a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.23). Ungo added another individual win in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.10).

The Explorers' depth showed throughout the meet, with senior Tori Fenn winning the 50-yard freestyle (23.72) and the 100-yard butterfly (55.38), while junior Zyenna Martinez claimed first in the 100-yard backstroke (57.59). La Salle closed the women's portion in style by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Van Selm, Fenn, Marin Martinez, and senior Maren Schermerhorn combined for a 1:35.14 finish.

On the men's side, La Salle also opened strong with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of senior Tarik Gusic, junior Carter Perkins, senior Felix Jedbratt, and junior Austin Wakefield took first in 1:29.65, setting the pace for the meet. Perkins followed with a pair of standout freestyle performances, winning the 200-yard free (1:39.79) and the 100-yard free (45.46).

Jedbratt continued his strong form with wins in both the 200-yard butterfly (1:46.67) and the 100-yard butterfly (47.44). In the backstroke events, freshman Blaise Hofmann earned victories in the 100-yard backstroke (50.12) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.25), while Gusic added a win of his own in the 50-yard freestyle (21.47).

The Explorers capped the meet with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay, as Jedbratt, Gusic, Wakefield, and Perkins combined for a first-place time of 1:22.59.

La Salle will be back in action in three weeks, when it will travel down south to compete in the conference championships. The four-day meet will start on Wednesday, February 18.
