PHILADELPHIA – Johan Roth has been named GoExplorers.com Student-Athlete of the Week for October 22.
The freshman put on a show in his college debut on Saturday, finishing first in the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke events as well as the 200 yard individual medley in the Explorer's victory over Drexel.
Roth clocked a 58.78 in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing four-hundredths of a second ahead of defending Atlantic 10 champion and teammate
Blase Szyszko.
The South African registered a time of 2:06.09 in the 200 yard breaststroke, finishing nearly five seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. His time of 1:57.48 in the individual medley was good for the event crown, securing victories in all three individual events in which he competed.
“I am very pleased with the first meet's outcome,” Roth said. “Going into the meet I had no idea what to expect.
“I would have liked swimming faster times but considering all the training that was done before the meet and that it's my first meet I can't really expect anything more.”
Roth believes this team has an edge will use Saturday's momentum moving forward.
“I think the team did awesome,” Roth said. “Everyone is on top of their game. The team wants to perform, there is a very completive atmosphere in the team not only during the meet but also practices, and everyone set for a very good season.”
Head coach
Matt Nunnally praised Roth's performance and mindset in his college debut.
“Johan had an outstanding meet this weekend,” Nunnally said. “Winning three individual events in his first collegiate dual meet is a big accomplishment.
“I was pleased to see Johan handle the pressure. He was able to go out and perform without letting the pressure get to him.”
La Salle Swimming & Diving is back in the pool on Wednesday at Villanova.
