PHILADELPHIA - Temple got one goal just before the halftime break and one more just after the break in an eventual 3-0 decision over the La Salle men's soccer team at McCarthy Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Hurricane Sandy held off as the squad was able to get in the annual Senior Day celebration and the entire game with nary a drizzle. Eight players (
Glenroy Chapman,
Jim Clark,
Tom Kalpokas,
Rob McIntyre,
Jeff Pio,
Kameron Teel,
Zach Turchi and
Alex Workman) and team videographer Rob Knaster were honored prior to Sunday's game.
Jared Martinelli got the visitors on the board at the 41 minute mark for what proved the deciding goal. Vaughn Spurrier chipped the ball to Cody Calafiore, who passed to Martinelli for the score. Martinelli then added an assist just after the break. He took a reset kick off of a La Salle foul, which found the head of Nolan Hemmer who bumped the ball into the goal to put the Owls up 2-0 at 46:53.
Homero Rodriguez added one more in the 86th minute. Jake Lister passed out of traffic on the right side of the box, finding Rodriguez on the left in front of an open net.
The Owls held a 19-11 shot advantage. Ten different La Salle players attempted, with
Tom Kalpokas leading with two shots. Martinelli led all with seven shots, six of which were on goal.
John McCarthy made nine saves in the effort. Owl keeper Dan Scheck stopped three shots.
The Explorers wrap up the regular season on the road next weekend, heading to St. Bonaventure on Friday at 3 p.m. followed by Duquesne on Sunday at 1 p.m.
