La Salle captured its first men's flag football championship in the 25+ year history of the City 6, with wins over Temple, Villanova and St. Joe's. The La Salle team, who were named the Broncos during the regular season, consisted of: captain Phil Consalvo, Dan Affeldt, Hassan Amin, Nick Boyle, Pat Devlin, AJ Groy, Rob McIntrye, Anthony & Nick Moffa, James Peden, Bill Petratis, Ed Sacco, Kegan Smith and Joe Taormina.
The Explorers opened the tournament with a 33-25 victory over Temple. Quarterback Nick Moffa set the tone early for the Explorers offense, hitting Kegan Smith and Nick Boyle for early scores. The experienced-Explorers wore down the Owls, with big defensive plays from Pat Devlin (2 PBU. 2 sacks) and Rob McIntyre (interception).
In the semi-final game, La Salle cruised to a 32-6 win over Villanova. The Explorers scored first, but the chippy Wildcats responded to tie the game at 6-6. La Salle scored the final 26 points of the contest with consistent offensive performances from Hassan Amin and Dan Affeldt. Ed Sacco (2 PBU, 6 flag pulls) patrolled the middle of the La Salle defense and helped keep the Villanova offense at bay.
The final test of the afternoon for the Explorers was a tough St. Joe's team. The Hawks, who beat Drexel to advance to the semi-finals, applied pressure on Moffa throughout the contest, but La Salle managed to find the end zone three times for the victory.
The first score of the day came on a James Peden touchdown reception. Nick Boyle followed up by snagging the conversion attempt to put the Explorers up 7-0.
Both teams struggled to move the ball at times, thanks to great pressure from each defensive line. AJ Groy (3 sacks) and Pat Devlin (1 PBU, 1 sack, 4 flag pulls) refused to allow Hawks offense to find a rythym.
The Explorers, who never trailed at any point during the tournament, took a 13-6 advantage into halftime. St. Joe's responded with a score in the second half, but missed the conversion attempt. Up 13-12, the Explorers offense rallied for a long drive that saw Nick Moffa hit Anthony Moffa from one-yard out to give the Blue & Gold a 19-12 lead.
St. Joe's mounted a drive, but the Hawks were stopped on a fourth down conversion attempt with 28 seconds remained. La Salle melted the clock to seal the school's first men's flag football title.
