McCarthy Sets New School Career Shutout Mark in 1-0 Win at St. Bonaventure; A-10 Playoff Hopes Still Alive

Box Score

OLEAN, N.Y. - Rob Friskey scored off of a corner in the sixth minute and the La Salle men's soccer squad withstood a 19-shot barrage from St. Bonaventure to top the Bonnies 1-0 in Olean on Friday afternoon.

With the shutout, goalie John McCarthy recorded his 22nd career blanking to set a new school record, breaking Stash Graham's record of 21 shutouts from 2001-04.

The Explorers also kept their chances alive for a third straight Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance.

Jason Plumhoff took a corner kick in the sixth minute, which found the head of Kevin Pink. The header was tapped over to Friskey, who finished off the game's only score.

The Explorers outshot the Bonnies 8-4 in the first frame before the home squad turned it up in the second half with 15 shots. McCarthy only needed to make two saves, though, as most of the shots sailed wide.

"St. Bonaventure is a very difficult place to go and get a result," Head Coach Pat Farrell said. "I think it was an extremely competitive game and we were fortunate enough to get an early goal. We were able to defend enough that we put the game away."

The Explorers stay on the road through Sunday, with a 1 p.m. contest at Duquesne in the regular season finale.
