PHILADELPHIA - The La Salle women's basketball squad is back on the road Saturday, tipping off against Rhode Island at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I., at 2 p.m. The Explorers will be wearing pink shoelaces as Saturday marks Rhode Island's annual breast cancer awareness day as part of the Play-4-Kay national campaign.
The Explorers hold a commanding 20-2 all-time record over the Rams and won last year in Philadelphia by a score of 61-49. Rhody's last win in the series came in 2009 and prior to that in 2002.
Scouting La Salle (11-13, 5-4 Atlantic 10)...
The Explorers are coming off of a heartbreaking 57-53 loss to A-10 and Big 5 rival Saint Joseph's. Despite battling back to take a lead midway through the second half, the Explorers could not pull away from the Hawks in the eventual four-point loss.
Alexis Scott led the squad with 20 points and
Brittany Wilson added a double-double of 11 points and 12 rebounds. Nine of her points came on 9-of-11 shooting at the free throw line.
Nadia Duncan also chipped in 11 points along with eight rebounds.
Wilson and Scott average double figures on the season, Wilson with a team-leading 14.0 ppg and Scott netting 12.7 ppg. However, four Explorers have averaged double figures in Atlantic 10 play - Wilson with 15.9, Scott with 11.6, and Duncan and
Jada Payne with 11.3 ppg apiece.
Duncan continues to lead the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage in A-10 play, nailing 63.9 percent of her shots. She is second overall in the same category when factoring in all games this season, hitting 55.6 percent.
Scouting Rhode Island (1-23, 0-9)...
Rhode Island has struggled this season, as the Rams have just one win and are in the midst of a 21-game losing streak. The Rams' lone win was a 52-43 victory over Providence back on Nov. 16.
The Rams dropped a 63-42 decision to Duquesne on Wednesday, and enter the game having lost their last seven by 10+ points.
Junior Ashley Rivera leads the squad in scoring, netting 11.3 points per game. Sophomore Emilie Cloutier chips in 9.2. Senior Sherrie Session is the team's leading rebounder with 6.4 boards per contest.
