BRONX, N.Y. - Fordham's Chris Gaston proved to be too much to handle inside, scoring a career-high 35 points and grabbing 16 rebounds in a 67-62 Ram victory over La Salle on Saturday at the Rose Hill Gymnasium. The forward, who ranks 14th nationally in offensive rebounds per game, pulled down 15 offensive boards.
“We were careless with the ball and they really out-toughed us on the boards,” head coach
Dr. John Giannini said. ”Their size bothered us.”
For La Salle, junior
Ramon Galloway had 14 points to lead five Explorers in double-figures. Senior
Earl Pettis had 12 points, sophomore
Tyreek Duren added 11, and sophomore
Sam Mills and freshman
Jerrell Wright each scored 10.
The Rams controlled the boards by a 49-34 margin and rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half by forcing the Explorers into 10 turnovers after intermission.
With La Salle leading 52-41 with 15:21 to play, Fordham went on a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to tie the score. The Explorers would go six minutes without a field goal and only managed two more baskets the rest of the way.
The visitors took a 62-61 lead with 5:16 to play on a Galloway dunk. Fordham took the advantage for the final time on a Devon McMillan fastbreak lay-up with 2:16 remaining and a couple Explorer turnovers eliminated any chance for a La Salle comeback.
LU (18-11, 7-7 A-10) led 38-25 late in the first half after a 15-0 run over seven minutes broke up a tightly contested game. Duren had 11 points in the first half to lead the Explorers.
Senior
Devon White pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds in 29 minutes.
Fordham improves to 10-17, 3-11 in the Atlantic 10.
